| A series of activities were planned to celebrate the 97th anniversary of the founding of Tsing Hua University and 52nd anniversary of the establishment of National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan.
The centerpiece of the entire series of anniversary activities, began on time at 10:30 am, on April 27 amidst a warm and happy atmosphere.
Firstly, NTHU President Chen Wen-tsuen gave a speech thanking everyone for participating and told how proud he himself is to be a graduate of NTHU. He expressed the hope that in five years, boosted by NT$50 billion in additional funding, NTHU will make big advance towards becoming a first-rate international university. He said that, in recent years, NTHU has achieved outstanding results in both teaching and research and has been actively looking for international cooperation opportunities. The "Thousand Points of Light Project (繁星計畫)" has diversified enrolment and enriched teaching. Teaching objectives are being set and teaching reforms are continually being made by all disciplines. The establishment of "Tsing Hua College" is to further up-grade undergraduate education. The opening of TSMC Hall and the large grassy area known as "the South Campus" have taken the development of the university a step forward.
This year the assembly was fortunate to have Dr. Ovid J. L. Tseng, President of University System of Taiwan, and Dr Kenneth Wu (Wu Kun-yu), General Director, National Health Research Institutes as guest speakers. Dr. Tseng said he was very pleased to see NTHU's outstanding achievements, especially in the top-notch university plan ratings, where NTHU's overall rating as "excellent" speaks for itself. Dr. Wu gave high praise to the university's emphasis on the humanities which has made NTHU one of leading universities in Taiwan for humanities and social sciences, not just engineering. In particular, he was very excited about the "Tsing Hua College" plan that has been actively promoted recently. Following Dr. Wu, two senior NTHU alumni were invited to share their thoughts. One, Chang Ning-hsing, graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1948. Sixty years after graduating, he told the audience, earnestly and with sincerity, "Don't let down NTHU." Chen Chao-wen, who graduated in 1968, and has lived overseas for almost 40 years, said that his trip back to Taiwan was a "search for roots," also praising the progress that Tsing Hau and Taiwan have made.
One of the highlights of the assembly was the commending of outstanding alumni, who included Chang Tse-wen, He Tai-shun and Chen Lai-chu. Chang stressed that he felt very happy and extremely proud to be supported and recognized by his alma mater. He arrived at NTHU from the countryside in 1966 and left in 1972. He expressed his gratitude to NTHU for opening the door to research for him and nurturing a desire to innovate that allowed him to perform outstandingly in his research and his contribution to medical science. He also told how he has had a strong affection for NTHU from his days as a student to the present. As he spoke his gratitude and happiness could be felt by all.
Then, He Tai-shun gave a speech in which he joked he has "mixed-blood" because he completed his bachelor's degree at National Chiaotung University before doing his masters at NTHU. He said, while studying at National Chiaotung University, he had already decided that he would do his graduate study at NTHU because he was attracted by the special campus atmosphere. When he was a graduate student at NTHU, he was a member of the Mountaineering Club. He maintains this hobby to this day and uses mountain climbing to "find himself". He encouraged the audience to "know how to give back and that helping people brings more joy than anything."
AUO, which Chen Lai-chu helps lead, is one of the top companies in the world in its field. He said "World ranking fluctuates. Even if we aren't No. 1, we are close enough to hear No. 1 breathe", showing great business confidence. He told a short story, recalling how, as a child, he was carried on his father's rickshaw at 2-3 am along the deserted streets of Taipei. Every time his father came to a red light, he stopped and waited for green before carrying on. It was this kind of strict family education and good example that formed his values and attitude.
During the ceremony, students, clubs and teams that have worked hard and performed outstandingly over the previous year were commended, including winners of the "National Award for the Outstanding Students in Community Services", China Youth Corps Outstanding College Students, winners of the Book and Scroll Prize for the first semester of 2007, clubs with excellent extra-curricula activities and the winning teams in this year's Meichu Games.
