A Ph.D. graduate of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Chen Lai-juh is one of those rare specialists in Taiwan whose expertise span across all fields of the TFT-LCD industry. His professionalism includes research and development, factory, information system, sales and marketing, as well as global manufacturing.
From Acer Display Technology, Inc. to AUO Optronics Corp., Chen Lai-juh has participated in the growth and changes of the two companies, including their merge. Under his leadership, AUO is now the largest TFT-LCD manufacturer in Taiwan, a top three around the world, and a legend in the global TFT industry. Chen’s most significant contribution to the FPD industry in Taiwan is his systematization of experiences, processes and systems. While involved in the sales department, Chen brought in the concept of product marketing and at the same time developed various high standard products that promised great business opportunities. Many soon proved to be extremely popular both at home and abroad as model products. In addition, Chen’s efficient integration of factories and production lines allowed AUO to achieve the best results in the shortest amount of time during both merges. It is truly because of Chen could Taiwan’s LCD industry enjoy its international status and influence today.
During his eight years of service at AUO, Chen Lai-juh has developed the ability to think macroscopically and comprehensively due to his involvement in roles that crossed many different fields. Chen was not only extremely capable in his executions and efficiency, he could also always think outside the box from the most fundamentals when confronted by challenges. He was a pioneer during Acer’s early establishment, an integrator during two large scale merges, a visionary to introduce strategies to the sales and marketing department, and a forerunner to employ the concept of global manufacturing. Under Chen’s solid leadership, AUO enjoyed fast factory establishments and business expansion with a firm foundation in every phase. As such, Chen could catapult AUO onto the international stage within just a few years’ time.
After graduation, Chen Lai-juh remains frequently in touch with his alma mater, the National Tsing Hua University. He was the third board director of the Tsing-Hua Foundation of Chemistry Technology. Over the years he has been invited by the university to deliver speeches and chemical engineering students have always benefited from seminars, industry forum and courses on optronics industry in which he generously shared his invaluable knowledge and experiences in the industry.
