Prof. Yu Ying-shih Accepted an Honorary Ph.D. and the Appointment as an Honorary Distinguished Chair Professorship

Prof. Yu Ying-shih, a world renowned scholar on Chinese thought history and the recipient of the John W. Kluge Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Humanities and Social Sciences in 2006, returned to Tsing Hua campus and accepted an honorary doctoral as well as the Distinguished Chair Professorship in a ceremony held on the 7th of July. President Wen-tsuen Chen praised Dr. Yu as the leading scholar of Chinese thought worldwide and his lifetime commitment to promote liberty and the democratic movement in contemporary China. As NTHU is gaining wider and wider recognition as the powerhouse of humanities and social sciences research and teaching, the affiliation with Prof. Yu will certainly further improve the quality of humanity education on this campus and enhance NTHU’s reputation as a balanced, comprehensive research university.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Yu expressed his appreciation for the honor that NTHU has bestowed on him and his willingness to do his part to work with colleagues and students at Tsing Hua to strengthen our reputation as an institute of higher learning that is not only excellent in the fields of science and technology but also emphasizes the studies of humanities and strongly committed to the betterment of society as a whole.

July 7th was also the date that the newly founded Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences officially started to function. Dr. Yu together with President Chen, Academicians Li Yih-yuan and Hwang Yi-Long, as well as Dean Chang Wei-an were at hand to officially launch the Center.
