The Industrial Technology Advancement Award was installed by the Ministry of Economics to encourage promising talents to participate in research and development of industrial technology. Tsing Hua Department of Chemical Engineering professor Chen-Chim Ma received the 2nd Industrial Technology Advancement Award for his long term dedication in the industry and outstanding achievements in both the industry and academia. An award ceremony was recently held by the Ministry of Economics to honor the recipient.

Ma has for many years devoted to research and development of polymeric materials such as plastic, rubble and composite materials as well as technology transfers. For the past two decades, he has also been assisting companies in these related fields. According to statistics by the Ministry of Economics, Taiwan has seen astonishing value output in petrochemical, plastic and rubber. The country's plastic raw material industry generates a value output of 350 billion NT dollars with 150 NT dollars for products; the rubber industry produces a value output of 85 billion NT dollars; and the composite materials industry 120 billion NT dollars. In recent years Ma has successfully transferred nanotechnology and energy and environmental materials technology to many companies, as well as assisted more than 200 companies through the Ministry of Economic's Department of Industrial Technology and Industrial Development Bureau. Since 1986, Ma has helped train over 5,000 people by directing the Industrial Development Bureau's "Manpower Training Project." His efforts have made significant and influential contributions to the chemical engineering and polymeric materials industries.

In addition to teaching and research, Ma is also an avid participant in various administration services. He had been Tsing Hua's Associate Dean of Research & Development Affairs, director of Tzu-chiang Science Research Center, chief executive of Tze Chiang Foundation of Science and Technology and consultant for the Ministry of Economics and Ministry of Education. At the same time, his teams have made substantial accomplishments in various materials research and development endeavors. He is a recipient of many awards, including the Executive Yuan Distinguished Technological Research Award, National Science Council Outstanding Research Award, Ministry of Education Academic-Industrial Collaboration Award.
