The Junior Chamber International, Taiwan announced the 46th Ten Outstanding Young Persons in the morning of October 27th, 2008. An award ceremony is scheduled for November. Recipients this year include Tsing Hua chemical engineering professor Chi-Chang Hu and baseball player Chien-Ming Wang currently playing for the American New York Yankees. They will receive a certificate and the Golden Hand Award, which that was installed to inspire youths them to strive for excellence.
Department of Chemical Engineering professor Chi-Chang Hu's primary research focus is developing nano composite materials of electrochemistry and energy storage that can be mainly applied to production of a new generation of electrochemical super-capacitor and related electrochemical energy storage devices. Highly acclaimed and respected, Hu's researches are often followed by international scholars for their innovation. Hu is one of those rare researchers in Taiwan whose papers saw a high citation rate. His international academic reputation reinforced when he received the Thomson Scientific Citation Laureate Award in 2006 and the Tajima Prize from the International Society of Electrochemistry in 2007. Hu is the only researcher at Tsing Hua as well as in the chemical engineering materials field in Taiwan to receive the former award. The award is bestowed to researchers whose papers see the highest number of citations in their professional field. The Tajima Prize is one of the important awards presented by the International Society of Electrochemistry. It was installed to laureate outstanding electrochemical scholars in the world under the age of 40 and only one recipient is produced every year. To date only two Chinese have received the honor.
Particularly noteworthy is Hu's academic influence and research achievements are as competitive as leading international scholars although he completed his doctoral studies in Taiwan. Evidently Taiwan's higher education has already achieved an international level and that Taiwan is expected to produce pioneering academic researches of the world in no time. For Hu, the Ten Outstanding Persons award is well deserved, as his exceptional academic accomplishments indeed serve as a model of emulation for youths in Taiwan.
