NTHU presented the honorable title of Distinguished Chair Professor to Dr. Peter Chen on December 8^th, 2009. Dr. Peter Chen currently holds the position of Distinguished Chair Professor at Louisiana State University in the United States. He is known internationally as the creator of the Entity-Relationship (ER) Model. His first paper on the ER Model was included in the "38 most influential papers in Computer Science" by a survey of over 1,000 computer scientists. Additionally, Dr. Chen is an IEEE, ACM, AAAS fellow and a frequent recipient of many distinguished awards, such as ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award, IEEE Harry Goode Award, DAMA International Achievement Award, Stevens Software Method Innovation Award, and Pan Wen-Yuan Outstanding Research Award. He was inducted into the "Data Management Hall of Fame" and recognized as one of the top 16 "software pioneers" in the world.

When presenting the appointment, President Wen-tsuen Chen lauded Dr. Chen for his outstanding contribution to the field of computer science and indicated that it is an honor of NTHU to have Dr. Chen as one of distinguished chair professors. President Chen believes that students will benefit much from Dr. Chen's participation in our education and research programs.

Dean Chintay Shih pointed out the great benefit to the College of Technology Management to have acclaimed scholars such as Dr. Chen to join its faculty. It is hoped that his experiences and reputation in computer science will bring NTHU's College of Technology Management to a new level.

An accepting the appointment, Dr. Chen noted NTHU's reputation as a top university in Taiwan. He recommended the NTHU can further improve itself by: 1. Strengthening of the Institute of Service Science under the College of Technology Management. It is the first such institute of its kind in Taiwan; 2. Develop the capability crisis responses in order to efficiently restore system operation after severe crisis; and 3. Actively collaborate with the international community, industry and alumni.
