The British The Times Higher Education Supplement has recently announced its world university ranking. Amidst Taiwanese universities' falling trend, NTHU instead shows a significant climb of 53 notches from the 343rd place in 2006, 334th in 2007 to 281st in 2008.
Of the top 400 universities ranked by the QS World University Rankings, Taiwan has four universities: the National Taiwan University (NTU, 124th place), National Tsing Hua University (281st place), National Yang Ming University (NYMU, 341st place), National Cheng Kung University (NCKU, 354th place). The National Central University, National Chiao Tung University, National Sun Yat-sen University and Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology were among the top 400-500. NTHU is ahead of other Taiwanese universities in two indicators, "citations per faculty" and "international faculty." This means that NTHU exceeds all other Taiwanese universities in terms of average academic performance per faculty and is approaching world's top 100.
NTHU has in recent years shown remarkable performance in world university rankings, national assessments and fund competitions. In particular the University has made outstanding achievements since it had successfully competed for the funding from the Project of Promoting Academic Excellence. Furthermore, NTHU has also shown steady rise in the Shanghai Jiaotong University's 2008 Academic Ranking of Universities in the World published just last August. The present ranking by The Times certainly adds to the University's outstanding track record of performances. Looking ahead, with the concerted efforts by the faculty and students, we believe we will continue to advance.
