Miss Shen Hsin-Ling, a freshman at the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, is unlike many of her classmates. At her young age, she has already compiled a very impressive record of volunteer service and entrepreneurial accomplishments. Her enthusiasm to support people-in-need has touched the hearts of many and inspired even more. Hsin-Ling's story has been included in social studies textbooks that are widely used in elementary and junior high schools throughout Taiwan.
Growing up in a poor family, Hsin-Ling was determined to seek ways to improve her family's financial condition and to help those who were also hurting financially. She got her first computer when she was twelve years old and started learning computer skill when she was still in junior high. She opened her own programming workshop and started to design web sites for farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs who wanted to market their produces through the web. As a self-taught programmer, she has acquired more than thirty international certificates attesting to her programming proficiency. Her educational experiences and attainments are widely recognized. She was selected as one of the recipients of the Presidential Education Award, the Medal of National Distinguished Youth in 2005, and just last year The Award for the Ten Most Promising Persons.
In addition to her computer skills, Miss Shen is also an accomplished photographer. She has travelled widely throughout Taiwan and used her camera to record the diligence of people in all walks of life. Using her versatile hotographic
skill and aesthetic eye, Hsing Ling has complied the "Faces of Perseverance," a portrait album of ordinary workers showing their perseverance and devotion. Miss Shen uses her art not only as a record of diligent and resolute people but also as a means to inspire her audiences when invited to give public talks.
