On September 15th President Ma Ying-Jeou presented former NTHU President Chao-Shiu Liu with the Irder of Chiang Chung-Cheng with Great Cordon for his outstanding contributions to Taiwanese society. In addition, Chao-Shiu Liu was also honored with the Dr. Mei-I-Chi Honorary Distinguished Chair by President Wen-Tsuen Chen. Also in attendance at the ceremony was madam Ming-Sai Liu, Vice-President of Academic Sinica Chao-Han Liu, former NTHU President, Dr. Chun-Laung Liu, and President Tsong-Ping Perng of Uan Ze University as well as Vice-Presidents Shih-Lin Chang, Ming-Chuen Yip and Chia-Wei Li.
At the awarding ceremony President Ma commented on the outstanding achievement and contributions Chao-Shiu Liu has made to the nation during his tenure as the Premier, including overseeing the reorganization of the government and reconfiguring metropolitan administrative boundaries. President Ma was particularly grateful for Dr. Liu's service during the global financial crisis and helping to promote the successful opening of direct cross-strait flights. In addition, President Ma mentioned his admiration for Dr. Liu's administrative style and ability that he has shown while president of NTHU and Soochow University. His extraordinary administrative performance was clearly exemplified by his ability to administer two completely different types of universities; one a research and the other a teaching university, and yet both experience significant improvement under his leadership.
NTHU president Wen-Tsuen Chen also presented Dr. liu with the Dr. Mei I-Chi Honorary Chair, the highest honor the school has to offer. Dr. Liu first started as a teaching faculty in the Department of Chemistry and later went on to serve as the dean of the College of Science. In August of 1987 Dr. Liu assumed the position of the Presidency and began to restructure the university's charters to conform with the lifting of marshal law and helped to establish campus autonomy. Dr. Liu left NTHU in 1993 to take up various posts in the government including a three-year as the Minister of transportation. He also served as the chair of the National Science Foundation and deputy Premier. However, even with his hectic schedule Dr. Liu still found time to oversee the planning and construction of the NTHU Science and Technology Policy Research Center.
President Chen noted that, "NTHU was established in Hsinchu 53 years ago, its teaching and research programs are well known domestically and internationally and continues to uphold the motto, "To oneself be true, give nature its due," encouraging students and faculty alike to be conscientious of the wellbeing of society. It is NTHU's hope that Dr. Liu will continue to support the institution so that we may together continue to promote a healthy and harmonious society."
