During the past summer, seven volunteer teams went to Nepal, Ghana, Indonesia, Tanzania, as well as China to serve local populations in various capacities and to learn from them. Each team selected a special service that they believe was most needed in their target area and recruited accordingly. In addition, to ensure quality of service and cultural awareness all volunteers were required to go through a pre-departure workshop.
The first team to depart was the Nepal team. Volunteers worked in rural areas providing clinical service as well as educational programs on public hygiene. In addition, a new program, digital medical histories, was established through the additional funds received. The funds were specifically donated to setup a digital medical record archive so as to provide better health care service. Furthermore, the team also constructed a water tower that would purify the drinking water for the villagers.
The team that went to Aceh, Indonesia focused on information technology, their service included; training the local youth interested in information service to participate in public service as well as IT extension education. Many local teachers also attended the IT extension education program.
NTHU sent a total of two teams to Africa. One went to Tanzania and the other Ghana. The Ghana group also established a two week IT school program teaching local students the basics of IT and showcased how the volunteers themselves have used IT to record their cultural heritage and help the Ghana people complete seven documentary films on local customs and cultural activities. The Tanzania team focused on helping the local population establish a computer lab as well as assisted local teachers in developing a two week IT and network training curriculum. They also went with 35 donated computers which were used to equip the two labs they established.
The teams that went to Yinchuan, Ningxia were composed of 20 students recruited from the Taiwan United Universities System and supported by the Wenshi Ren Foundation. The team setup an Oxford English summer camp and offered training programs as well as various extracurricular activities. The Qinghai team had a different kind of service scheme. They concentrated on elementary and middle school education. Volunteers provided tutoring services as well as classroom instructions including mathematics, language, arts, physics, chemistry and biology.
In addition to the above-mentioned teams, NTHU students also worked with the AIESEC program and went to the Philippines to provide Chinese instruction. Other groups also went to Beijing, India, Egypt as well as Istanbul to take part in various local volunteer projects.
Although they went to different countries and engaged in different service, all came home with the same feeling. They believe they have widened their horizons and expanded their perspective on the beauty of cultural diversity.
