In conjunction with NTHU's celebration of its 54th anniversary, the class of 1970 also celebrated their 40th homecoming. The homecoming was an opportunity for former students to reminisce, rediscover the campus and catch up.
Newly inaugurated President Lih J. Chen said a few words to kick off the event. "In the 1940s, those first students who came to Tsing Hua met a growing economy and a new nuclear age. Sixteen years later through the support of those same first brave students Tsing Hua was able to establish the campus we have today here in Hsinchu. The Tsing Hua of tomorrow will also require the support of alumni such as yourselves."
Class of 1970, Ms. Ling-ling Chen spent half a year getting in touch with former classmates and preparing festivities for this year's homecoming. Alumni Haydn H. D. Chen was also able to collect over-million NTD from alumni as a gift to the school. When presenting the gift he commented, "We were like little chicks still learning to fly, we hope from our first steps future graduates of NTHU will be able to venture beyond the nest and explore the world around them." Upon accepting the gift President Lih J. Chen said, "With this generous we will be able to complete construction of a state of the art gymnasium. I hope other alumni will echo your enthusiasm."
The activities and joyful atmosphere of the homecoming event seemed to be unstoppable. Alumni Kuo-Hsiung Lin came dressed in official 1970's school garb; embroidered with the school's name and his student ID number. Another alumni, and current NTHU professor, Sen Yen Shaw, brought their class flag.
In an age where university students number in the thousands and ever growing disciplines it seems hard to imagine that forty years ago NTHU was only comprised of only four departments – physics, Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry and Mathematics – and the student body numbered only eight-hundred. As this group of alumni sit reminiscing about the events of the past forty years, one can only wonder what changes NTHU will experience in the next forty years!
