Dr. Weidr Lee, a graduate of the class of 1969 in Nuclear Engineering (now Engineering and System Science), has donated NT$150,000,000 for the construction of a "Green Energy Teaching and Research Building." Dr. Lee arrived on May 17 to formally announce his generous donation. This building will be named "Tsuen-Ming Lee Building" in honor of Dr. Lee's father. This is the largest individual endowment since Tsing Hua was re-established in Taiwan!
"I expect that NTHU enters the world's top 100 institutions soon," said Lee, who received his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering in 1975 from Penn State before joining General Electric Company as a senior engineer. In 1980, Dr. Lee started his own construction company.
Dr. Lee felt deeply about the solemn calling to give back to the society. He was impressed with President Chen's advocacy of building a "green/new energy campus", and thought that giving to NTHU would be the best way to commemorate his father, who had always wanted to promote educational program in his life time.
The university held a press conference to announce Dr. Lee's generosity on May 18. In the conference, it was pointed out that a higher-learning institution like NTHU would need resources to stay competitive, and we hope more people would be inspired by Dr. Lee's example. President Chen also asked Dr. Lee to be on the university advisory board for campus building and planning, so as to capitalize on Dr. Lee's expertise in these areas.
The "Green Energy Teaching and Research Building" will conform to six different "green indices", with eight floors plus a basement, the building will be dedicated to teaching and researches on nuclear, solar, and hydrogen "low-carbon" energies.
