In the service course they took last semester, NTHU students demonstrated their creativity by making "toys" for animals in Hsinchu Zoo, hoping to improve the living quality of these animals. Their action was reported in the media and attracted the attention of the Jane Goodall Institute –Taiwan. So they decided to invite Dr. Jane Goodall, during her 14th visit to Taiwan, to promote the quality of living conditions for the animals in Hsinchu, Zoo.

Hsinchu Roots-and-Shoots Day 2010, jointly hosted by NTHU, Hsinchu Zoo and Jane Goodall Institute was held on Sep., 6. It focused on promoting the ideas and ideal of conversation through interacting with the animals to gain an understanding of animal welfare and eco-protection. This campaign won the active response from hundreds of students from primary, secondary & high schools as well as universities in Hsinchu. President Lih J. Chen was invited to attend the Hsinchu Roots-and-Shoots Day, together with Hsinchu Mayor Hsu Ming-Tsai to show their support for the campaign.

The campaign designed a special activity named "Human Zoo" to remind people how the caged animals would feel when they were so confined! Dr. Jane Goodall, President Lih J. Chen and Mayor Hsu Ming-Tsai entered the zoo cage with the public to experience being caged. Dr. Jane Goodall said, "It is difficult for us to imagine being confined in a zoo cage, because we know we will get out of the cage sooner or later. For the animals, however, it is like a life imprisonment; they are confined for the most part of their life. Thus, we should make every effort to provide them with a more comfortable condition in the zoo."

Dr. Jane Goodall started her speech by imitating the scream of chimpanzee. She expressed humans have damaged the eco-environment, which not only results in the extinction of many species, but also the destruction of our living environment as well. She initiated the Campaign of Roots-and-Shoots in 1991, only 12 students from senior high attended the first meeting! Over these years, she has spent 300 days each year to appeal to the world to pay attention to the consequences brought by environmental destruction. Today, there are over 15,000 communities in 120 countries participating in this movement. Although the power of each community is as weak as new roots and new shoots, it can spread and eventually grow and multiple.

Dr. Jane Goodall affirmed the efforts Taiwan has made to support the eco-environment conservation in recent years. She cited the water-quality improvement in Taipei County, and the restoration of the Taiwan sika deer and formosan landlocked salmon, to showcase the belief that everyone can contribute to the improvement of eco-environment as soon as his attitude is changed.

During the campaign, Dr. Jane Goodall signed the Hsinchu City Animal-Friendly Declaration with other VIPs, planted a couple of trees in the zoo, and unveil the plate of Roots & Shoots Square. Bamboo Dragonfly Green Festival provided vegetable and fruit and demonstrate the right way to feed animals.
