On autumn holiday with a great atmosphere, Teacher's Day has arrived once again.On Thursday, September 23 at 11 am, in the International Conference Hall, NTHU President Lih J. Chen hosted an illustrious tea party to express appreciation and warmth to faculty members for their many years of educational service. During the tea party, Chair Professorships and Emeritus positions were presented to specially honored professors, as well as the 2010 NTHU Annual Outstanding Instructor Award and the Ministry of Education Excellent Senior Instructor Award to display our appreciation for the contributions of our professors. Simultaneously, there were an introduction of newly hired faculty members to give them a warm welcome and a formal introduction to the university community.
Dr. Lih J. Chen states that NTHU professors are extremely diligent, both in their research and teaching, with shinning results. Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and the QS Top Universities rankings both listed NTHU within its top 200 schools of higher education. President Chen said that he was delighted with the university's accolades, but the achievements are completely the result of hard work and not good fortune. The rankings of the world's top universities reflect the great reputation of NTHU's faculty. President Chen emphasized that being a professor at NTHU is a privilege; not only has it have a beautiful campus and talented students, being at NTHU means that one will be widely respected in the greater Taiwanese society. President Chen especially noted that alumni have lavished their affection and great expectations upon the university, and even exchange students from China have highly praised NTHU's instructors on their passion for education. In closing, Dr. Chen gave his Teacher's Day blessings and encouraged all faculty members to continue to make astounding progress in research, education, and service.
NTHU's "Chair Professorship and Distinguished Professorship" plan is a method of recruiting talented individuals and a way to spur professors to pursue excellence in their respective fields. Those who obtained the honor of one of these two positions include two NTHU Chair Professorships, awarded to Professor Shangjr Felix Gwo, Department of Physics and Professor Hsin-wen Sung, Department of Chemical Engineering, and six Distinguished Professorships given to Professor Jui-Chou Hsu of the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Professor Chen-Fu Chien of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, Professor Yu-Cheng Hu of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Professor Chien-Tien Chen of the Department of Chemistry, Professor Ming-Sian Bai of the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering, and Professor Jeng-Hong Liang of the Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Science.
To reward professors with strong performance, NTHU established the "Outstanding Faculty Award". This year's winners include Department of Physics Professor Jow-Tsong Shy, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Environmental Sciences Professor Yuh-Chang Sun, Institute of Molecular Medicine Professor Jui-Chou Hsu, Center for Teacher Education Professor Angela Yi-ping Hsu, Department of Mathematics associate Professor Shu-Jung Kao, Department of Foreign Language Professor Viphavee Vongpumivitch, Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Science Professor Jenq-Horng Liang, NTHU Language Center Lecturer Chia-Yu Huang, Department of Electrical Engineer associate Professor Shang-Da Yang, Department of Power Mechanical Engineering Professor Ting-Jen Yeh, and Department of Materials Science and Engineering Professor Chih-Huang Lai.
The tea banquet additionally honored to those instructors who have served 40, 30, 20,and 10 years, respectively. NTHU recognizes the significance of their service and contributions, with Dr. Jiann-Ruey Chen of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and 28 other instructors receiving honors. A powerpoint presentation introduced the 49 new members of NTHU’s faculty. After the formalities and award ceremony, the Office of Personnel will provide a sumptuous variety of delicacies and beverages.
