On September 2~3, The 8th "Cross-Strait Go and Bridge Tsing Hua Cup" was held in the International Students Activity Center. This year, over 70 students and faculty members participated. After two days of intense competition the results were: contestants from Beijing's Tsinghua won in both Go and Bridge, claiming the championship.
Since the first "Cross-Strait Go and Bridge Tsing Hua Cup", it has become the bridge between the two universities on which many friendships have been built. Every year before the beginning of the school year the contestants of the Go section and Bridge section are divided into four groups in total by alumni and students to participate in a three round competition. This competition has become the social event of September for both Tsinghua universities. During the 1st through 5th "Cross-Strait Go and Bridge Tsing Hua Cup" Beijing Tsinghua was the victorious champion. In 2008 the championship changed hands as Hsinchu dominated the field for the 6th and 7th tournaments, regrettingly this year the championship has once again changed hands.
In the Bridge section the score for the faculty group was 53:37 and the student's was 21:69, totaling in a score of 74:106 with Beijing Tsinghua victorious. Contestant 12, Huairen Liu of the Materials Science and Engineering Department, said this was the first time he has participated and that before the tournament he heard talk of how good the opponents would be. Therefore he decided to relax and enjoy the games, treating them as a chance to meet new friends. According to Huairen, the reason students of Beijing Tsinghua University won was that they were well paced, well practiced and didn't make mistakes when calling cards. He also feels that this is something he should learn.
In the Go section the score was Hsinchu's 11 to Beijing's 13 wins, a difference of two games! Youcheng Lai of the Department of Engineering and System Science, who has represented Hsinchu Tsinghua in the tournament for three years running, says that this annual event has become his routine every school year and that every year he enjoys the games immensely. Youcheng thinks the main reason Beijing Tsinghua won was because the contestants of Hsinchu Tsinghua did not play as good as they could have been, For students from both schools who are interested in Go to get to know each other through social interactions like these is more important than winning or losing.
