"Mr. Jen-Shyong Ho, Chairman of the Ho Chin-Tui Education Foundation and the Tung Ho Steel Enterprise Corporation together with NTHU have written a new page in the education history of our nation," said President Lih J. Chen during the award ceremony of the Ho Chin-Tui Distinguished Chair Professorship and the Ho Chin-Tui Chair Professorship. President Chen noted that universities in Taiwan have made great strides in recent years to upgrade their academic capability and are beginning to attract international recognition. The momentum of such ascendancy, however, was somewhat restrained due to the amount of resources available to the public universities in our country. This situation is about to be changed by efforts made by civic and industrial leaders such as Dr. Ho Jen-Shyong. Dr. Ho's magnanimous donation to endow the two chair professorships made it possible for NTHU to recruit and retain the brightest and the best in a highly competitive market and continue its effort ascending toward a world-class university. Dr. Ho remarked that the industrial and business sectors in Taiwan used to concentrate their support to the universities mainly in the improvement of infrastructure. He believes, his donation to endow the two chair professorships meets the urgent needs of NTHU and is sustainable in nature. It intends to assist NTHU in the highly competitive market and it will also provide the needed recognition for deserving faculty members who have excelled in their research endeavors.
Prof. Show-An Chen, Department of Chemical Engineering and the recipient of the Ho Chin-Tui Distinguished Chair Professorship stated that the Foundation has a long and a distinguished history in supporting education in our country. It started with scholarship for students who have excelled in their studies. As the time goes by, the Foundation has also evolved. It took note of the fact that Taiwan needs to further upgrade its technological development and started to direct its resources toward supporting university faculty and researchers.
Its generosity and foresight are truly admirable. Having received the Ho Chin-Tui Distinguished Research Award in the past, Prof. Chen is grateful to receive this Chair Professorship and would like to thank Dr. Ho and his Foundation and Company for their generosity.
Drs. Keh-Yung Cheng and Kuang-Chien Hsieh, recipients of the Ho Chin-Tui Chair Professorship were both recruited from their previous position at Univ. of Illinois-Urbana Champaign which has one of the best research and instruction programs in Electrical Engineering. Dr. Cheng was very grateful with this award; it will allow him to continue his research after retirement. He believes that this award not only represents an honor, it also represents a challenge. It challenges him to continue his pursue of excellence and encourages him to revitalize his research endeavor.
Prof. Hsieh, the other recipient expressed his gratitude by indicating that we should all applaud Dr. Ho's Foundation and Company for the endowment they have made. It sends a message to the researchers that the public not only cares about their works but is also ready to recognize their contributions. He extended his best wishes to the Foundation and Company and anticipate that more and more deserving researchers will receive the honor and recognition that he and Prof. Cheng are receiving.
