In the middle of spring when the coldness of winter was yet to dissipate, the atmosphere at both NTHU and National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) was already steaming. They were all warming up for the Games. This year's Mei-Chu Games took place between March 4th and 6th and was introduced by the President of the country, Mr. Ma Ying-Jeou. While there was only one victor in each of the contested games, the Games ended with two winners because the friendship between neighboring NTHU and NCTU was renewed and strengthen.
During the opening ceremony, NTHU President Lih J. Chen stated that the Mei-Chu Games has a long history and is one of most important events in our two universities. The tournament has built strong relationships that facilitated many joint research programs and academic cooperations between two universities.
On the first day, NTHU already had reason to celebrate, having received their first point after winning table tennis by a score of 4 to 1. NTHU table tennis coach De-cheng Wu noted that this game is a perfect start to the Mei-Chu Games, as it tests the students' fighting spirit, courage and ability to stay calm under pressure. For example, the second player, Ms. Bi-yu Shin lost the first two sets because she was not familiar with the style of her opponent. After adjusting her strategy, she amazed the crowd by successfully overcame her predicament.
On the second day, basketball took center stage. The NTHU male basketball team beat NCTU by a score of 72 to 63. During the first three quarters, the game was close. In the fourth quarter, the NTHU men played as they were reading each others' minds; their supreme skills and team work helped them overcome their opponents, adding another winning point for NTHU. The intensity of the game was no less than that seen in professional games.
The last day's volleyball games treated spectators to one thrilling moment after another. The NTHU men won the second game, but regrettably lost the rest. The NTHU women thus held the university's tournament fate in their hands. The dramatic situation would result in the most exciting moment of the tournament. NTHU's first two games were fraught with instability, letting NCTU slip ahead by two points. During the third game, the team regrouped and won that and the following game by 25 to 19 and 23 to 15. In the fifth tiebreaking game, the NTHU women fought hard, but sadly lost. In the end, the NTHU won the official games in table tennis, tennis, men's basketball and bridge, for a total of four points. The NCTU teams won in badminton, baseball, chess, women's basketball and men's and women's volleyball and finished with a total of five points, walking away with the 2011 trophy!
