In the morning of March 11th, a joint academic forum participated by doctoral students from Tsing Hua-Beijing and Tsing Hua-Hsinchu was opened on the Tsing Hua campus in Beijing. This three-day forum attracted thirty faculty members and over 130 doctoral students from the two Tsing Huas and was planned as one of the events to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the founding of Tsing Hua in 1911.
The opening ceremony featured speeches made by Vice President Ming-Chuen Yip from NTHU, Vice Chair Zai-Xing Zhang of Tsing Hua University (THU) as well as Vice Chair Xin Chi of the Chinese Culture Promotion Society. In addition, Prof. Xin Chi, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. Qian Yi and Prof. Ping-Chiang Lu, Dean of Student Affairs at NTHU were also invited as speakers at the opening ceremony.
In his opening remarks, Vice Chair Zhang reminded the audience about the common roots share by the two Tsing Huas and the strong bonds that these two sister universities have established between them. Both universities share the conviction that cultivating talents is one of their most important tasks as institutions of higher education and the joint forum symbolizes the continuing exchange and cooperation of the two sister universities. Vice President Yip reported on the mechanism established in 2010 to pool resources and exchange expertise in various research areas between the two sisters. He was delighted to participate in the first joint academic forum specifically organized for doctoral students and he hopes such a forum will become an annual event to provide a platform for young scientists and scholars to share their research results and learn from each other.
Topics discussed at this forum were selected from the strong and excellent research programs that the two universities have developed in recent time. These include: life science, new researches in materials science, the development of new energy sources, information technology as well as modern management.
In addition, a Youth Responsibility and Leadership Forum of Capital Universities was also held at the same time and attracted nearly 200 graduate students from 50 universities in the greater Beijing area. The theme of this youth forum was "Inheriting the Spirit of the Last Century, Embracing the Mission of Our Time." Participants discussed enthusiastically on the unique responsibility that modern youth have to assume and how they can better prepare themselves in the age of accelerating globalization.
