The year 2011 has a special meaning to all Tsing Hua people. It marks the centennial anniversary for the two Tsing Huas, one in Beijing and the other in Hsinchu. It is also the 55th anniversary of Tsing Hua in Hsinchu. Although the exact date of the anniversary was the 24th of last April, there were many celebratory events held in Hsinchu, Beijing and California during the months before and after April.

On April 25th, one day after the grand celebration in Hsinchu, President Lih J. Chen flew to San Francisco to join NTHU alumni in the Bay Area to celebrate the anniversary of Tsing Hua and NTHU. At the anniversary banquet, President Chen expressed his deep appreciation to the alumni for the enthusiastic and generous support they have rendered to their alma mater and reported on the recent developments at NTHU. He reported that the "Club One Hundred" which he initiated to raise funds for a multi-functional gym has been a great success. For example, in the Bay Area along we have nine generous alumni who gave more than one million NT$ each toward the project and became members of the "Club One Hundred." These include Mr. Frank Kung, Ms. Shu-Ching Cheng, Mr. Yue-The Jang, Mr. Roger Lian, Ms. Yuh-Ning Chen, Mr. Victor Jiang, Ms. Der-Min Fan, Ms May-Chu Chen and Mr. Roa-Wen Chen. While NTHU is very grateful to all generous alumni, it takes greater pride in the accomplishments of its graduates. It was their great achievements in industries, business as well as academic and research circles that made NTHU a shining institution of higher education recognized not only in Chinese speaking region but also globally.

On the 21st of May, alumni of Tsing Hua Beijing and NTHU held joint celebration of Tsing Hua's centennial at the Flint Center, Cupertino, California. The Flint Center is a theater with the seating capacity of 2,400 but there were not enough seats to accommodate all the enthusiastic alumni who graduated from Tsing Hua Beijing and NTHU. In his speech, President Lih J. Chen recounted the close relationship between the two Tsing Huas. He cited a news article, titled " NTHU and THU Are Extremely Alike, and Getting Along Famously," published by the United Daily News reporting on the recent visit of President Gu of Tsing Hau Beijing to NTHU. President Chen believes that the title of this news article catches the true spirit of the relationship between the two universities. We are "alike" not only in the sense that we share the very same roots and many intellectual giants as our teachers; we are both famous for the great talents that we have cultivated. And, yes, we are getting along famously for we have established a close partnership in our research efforts as well as in the exchange of our students and faculty members.
