Dr. Roger D. Kornberg on "The Expression of Genetic Information"

12/25 Ching-Wu Chu Awarded NTHU Honorary Distinguished Chair Professorship
On December 8th a ceremony was held to honor Dr. Ching-Wu (Paul) Chu as a Honorary Distinguished Chair Professorship. 12/23 President Chen Elected Vice President of AEARU
Representing NTHU, President Wen-Tsuen Chen along with Secretary General Professor Mao-Jiun Wang recently attended the 15th Annual General Meeting and the 25th Board of Directors Meeting of Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) which was held from December 2nd to the 4th at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. AEARU is a regional organization founded in 1996 to promote academic exchange and cooperation among major research universities in the region. While at the meetings, President Chen and Professor Mao helped design activities and conferences for the coming two years. 12/22 Noble Laureate Astounds NTHU Audience
Dr. Harald zur Hausen, 2008 Noble Laureate in Medicine was invited to Taiwan to stir audiences with his lecture "Papillomaviruses in Human Cancers". The doctor was a guest of the Wen Shi Jen Foundation and gave lectures at various locations from November 26 to December 1, stopping by NTHU on November 30. Dr. Hausen's lecture at NTHU attracted a large audience of faculty and students as well as scientists from the greater Hsinchu area. After his lecture, a very lively question and answer session was held. It was clear from the questions raised that the audience in attendance was highly read on Dr. Haussen's work.......<<More>> |

12/03 Professor Decorated with School Honors
On November 11th a joint ceremony was held at Casa de Socrates to recognize new faculty's research accomplishments along with those who made important contributions to the manufacturing industry. Two senior faculty members Professor Jyh-Shing Jang, Department of Engineering and Professor Mao-Jiun Wang, Department of Industrial Engineering were selected as recipients of the Distinguished Award for Successful Collaboration with the Manufacturing Industry. The London Times special issue on education, Times Higher Education Supplement (THES), announced its 2009 world university rankings. It is with great pride that NTHU is happy to report our steady improvement in this world university ranking. In 2008, NTHU ranked 281st, this year we have moved up to 223rd. From a longer perspective, since NTHU started to receive special funding from the Ministry of Education in 2006 the university's overall performance has been astonishing. 11/10 NTHU Gets Lion's Share of Ministry of Education's Prestigious Awards
The lists of the 13th National Chair Professorship Award and 53rd Academic Award recipient were announced October 9th. Professor Chien-Hong Cheng from the Department of Chemistry won the national chair professorship and Professors Meng-Kiat Chuh, Department of Mathematics, Chen-Chi M. Ma, Department of Chemical Engineering and Tsong-Ping Perng, Department of Material Science won the ministry's academic award. 11/09 Serving Humanity through Humility – NTHU's Volunteer Corps Continue their Summer Service in Africa and South East Asia
During the past summer, seven volunteer teams went to Nepal, Ghana, Indonesia, Tanzania, as well as China to serve local populations in various capacities and to learn from them. Each team selected a special service that they believe was most needed in their target area and recruited accordingly. NTHU Choir recently attended the 10th annual Vivace International Choir Festival held in Veszprem, Hungary where they performed a selection of Taiwan aboriginal music. 09/30 Faculty and Students Rushed to Offer their Help to Typhoon Morakot Victims
Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan on the 7th of last August and wrought devastating damages to the southern part of the island. The wind was strong but it was the record-breaking rainfall, peaking at 2,777mm that brought the havoc of floods and mudslides. One mudslide buried the entire village of Hsiao Lin, killing almost all of the villagers. The fatalities were estimated at more than six hundreds and property damage exceeded NT$110 billion. While the government had mobilized a large rescue force, faculty members and students at NTHU were also quick in getting themselves organized and travelled to the affected areas with materials they themselves had donated and solicited. The first group of volunteers left Hsinchu on the 13th and they were followed by three more groups that travelled south to villages and townships to offer their help and compassion.......<<More>> |

The Shaw Prize Foundation announced the laureates for its 2009 Shaw Prize at a press conference in Hong Kong on June 16. Academia Sinica Academician and former NTHU President Frank H. Shu won the prize in astronomy for his outstanding achievements in theoretical astronomy as well as for his significant contributions to humanity. 09/24 Two Groups of Faculty and Staff Visited Top Universities in Japan and Korea
In the spirit of learning from one's peers, NTHU sent two groups of faculty members and administrative staff to visit leading universities in northeastern Asian. The first group, led by Vice President Ming-Chuen Yip and Secretary-General Mao-Jiun Wang, visited Osaka University, Nara Women's University, University of Tsukuba in Japan and Seoul National University in Korea during their week-long study tour (July 26 - Aug. 2 ). The second group, led by Vice President Shih-Lin Chang and Dean Wei-Chung Wang of the Office of International Affairs also went to Osaka, Nara and Seoul universities but they also visited Nagoya University and Yhee-Hwa Women's University.......<<More>> |

06/17 NTHU Library Has the Most Comprehensive Collection of Publications on the Diauyutai Campaign
Diauyutai, a group of uninhibited islets off the northeast coast of Taiwan is hardly noticeable on a conventional map. Since the 1970s, however, it has become a hot spot and contended territory among the countries of this region. In terms of land size, it is less than seven square miles. It has no inhabitant except seagulls. Many countries in the region, however, claim sovereignty over these islets. Such claims and counter-claims had sparked a few diplomatic confrontations among nations such as Taiwan, China, Japan as well as the U.S. The Diauyutai issue is yet to be resolved; it might erupt again anytime. 06/08 Mr. T. J. Tseng Receives the Distinguished Alumni Award
Mr. T. J. Tseng graduated from the Department of Physics in 1972 and the Graduate Institute of Physics in 1974. He is currently the president of two major companies, Unimicron and Subtron. 05/19 Dr. Yong-fen Hsieh Won the Distinguished Alumni Award
Dr. Yong-fen Hsieh graduated from the Department of Materials Science in 1981. In 1983, she graduated with her masters from the Institute of Materials Science before further obtaining her Ph.D. from the same institute in 1987. During her time at NTHU, she function analytical research in semiconductor metal contact systems. 04/17 Nobel Laureate Dr. Chen Ning Yang Returned for Lectures and Seminars
Dr. Chen Ning Yang, the first Chinese to win the Noble Prize in Physics is currently the Mei I-chi Honorary Distinguished Chair Professor at NTHU. Born in Anhui, he was educated within the Tsing Hua educational institutions, from grade school to graduate school. He entered the graduate program at University of Chicago in l944 and received his doctoral degree in 1948. Mei-Chu Game, the famous annual intercollegiate game between NTHU and NCTU was instituted in l969. It has become, since its inauguration, one of the most important events on both campuses and in the entire Hsin Chu community. Last January French Physicist and Noble Laureate, Dr. Albert Fert gave two stirring lectures to a packed house at NTHU.
