NTHU setting an example of how to develop a green campus A Hydrogen Tank Exchange Station Will Be Built On Campus
In response to President Lih J. Chen's new "Green Campus" policy and to celebrate the up coming 100th anniversary of our NTHU, Alumni Mr. Eric Chen with the Asia Pacific Fuel Cell Technology Company developed and donated a hydrogen tank exchange station to usher in low pressure fuel cell vehicles to our campus. In the future, NTHU plans to establish a pool of hydrogen fueled campus vehicles, setting a precedent for environment friendly campuses.......<<More>>
NTHU team and supporters NTHU Won The Championship at the Student Cluster Competition
Under the instruction of Professor Yeh-Ching Chung, the six student team of Yu-Cheng Chen (senior), Yi-Man Ma (senior), Yi-Jun Chen (senior), Zhen-Wei Huang (senior), Yu-Jun Xue (senior) and Meng-Kai Liao (junior) went to New Jersey, USA to compete in the Student Cluster Competition (SCC) held at the world's largest international conference for high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis (SC) last November. There, they honored Taiwan by showing exemplarily skill, defeating seven other competing schools from Europe and America, claiming the championship for National Tsing Hua Universtiy.......<<More>>
Award Recipients and guests Professors Decorated with School Honors
On November 25th, an annually celebrated ceremony was held at Casa de Socrates to recognize new faculty's research accomplishments along with those who made important contributions to the manufacturing industry. Two senior faculty members, Professor Chih-Huang Lai of the Materials Science and Engineering Department and Professor Nen-Fu Huang of the Computer Science Department, were honored with the Distinguished Award for Successful Collaboration with the Manufacturing Industry. Prof. Yu-Lun Chueh and a member of his research team, Ms. Si-Ying Chen Assistant Professor Yu-Lun Chueh and Research Team Published in Nature
The international research team that Dr. Yu-Lun Chueh of the participated Materials Science and Engineering Department, used an epitaxial transfer method to successfully integrate certain chemical compounds on to silicon substrates, completing semiconductor-on-insulator technology. In the future, they hope to combine photonic and electronic components together, giving Taiwan's semiconductor industry an edge in the ever competitive world market. These research results have been published in the November 11th issue of Nature. In the afternoon of November 17th, Professor Yu-Lun Chueh and research members of NTHU were led by President, Lih J. The physics department's alumni of the 73rd class, Chairman Hongliang Hsieh of the Scientech Corporation, donated a piece from his personal collection to as the 100th birthday present. With three years of experience and a great deal of compassion, three groups of NTHU international volunteers brought hope and friendship to different corners of the globe. All participants of last summer's projects, despite of the fact that they went to different societies and performed different types of services felt that they had learned a great deal from the people they served and in the places they visited. Dr. Francoise Barre- Sinoussi, the winner of the 2008 Nobel Physiology or Medicine Prize and one of the discoverers of the Immunodeficiency Syndrome Virus (HIV/AIDS), gave a lecture at NTHU on October 5th on the topic of "HIV/AIDS Vaccine Research: From Today's Realities to Tomorrow's Hope". Prof. Lih J. Chen, President of NTHU in Taiwan, led a team of delegates to visit Tsing Hua in Beijing, China. This was a fruitful trip, as not only was a co-signed agreement made with Beijing Tsinghua University for both institutes to establish joint laboratories, but a great initiative to launch a dual-degree program was made as well. The Ministry of Education will present the 14th National Chair Professorship and 54th Academic Awardees List. In the service course they took last semester, NTHU students demonstrated their creativity by making "toys" for animals in Hsinchu Zoo, hoping to improve the living quality of these animals. Their action was reported in the media and attracted the attention of the Jane Goodall Institute –Taiwan. In December 2001, Macronix International Co., Ltd (MXIC) made a generous donation, in the handsome amount of 300 million NTD, to NTHU, for the construction of a Learning Resource Center. The construction of MXIC Learning Resource started last year and is expected to be completed in 2011 just in time for the centennial celebration of NTHU. While the construction project is progressing smoothly, the University administrators were hard at work to find the needed funds for the furnishing of the new Learning Resource Center. It was at this critical juncture that Chairman Miin Wu of the MXIC opened his checkbook and made another generous donation of 100 million NTD to help with the interior furnishing of the new building.......<<More>>

A world-renown linguist and political thinker, Dr. Chomsky, Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at MIT, visited NTHU on August 10, 2010. President Chen took this occasion to award Dr. Chomsky with an honorary doctorate in linguistics and an Honorary Chair Professorship to recognize his academic achievements and continuous contributions to the fields of linguistics, analytic philosophy, cognitive science. Prof. Andrew Yeh Down to 1 cm focal length: MEMS-Based Variable-Focus Liquid Lens
Finger-nail size, 50X magnification factor, wide angle, and sharper image than human eyes: these are the descriptions of a MEMS-based dielectric liquid lens. MEMS stands for "Micro Electro Mechanical System". The lens came out of NTHU's MEMS institute headed by Prof. Andrew Yeh, and will be mass-produced before the end of the year. Dr. Weidr Lee, a graduate of the class of 1969 in Nuclear Engineering (now Engineering and System Science), has donated NT$150,000,000 for the construction of a "Green Energy Teaching and Research Building." Dr. Lee arrived on May 17 to formally announce his generous donation. This building will be named "Tsuen-Ming Lee Building" in honor of Dr. Lee's father. NTHU swimming team NTHU Brings Home the Gold in the 2010 Intramural Games
Taiwan's universities recently held the 2010 Intramural Games. One-hundred and fifty-six universities in total participated, vying for the ever coveted gold medal. This year, NTHU earned nine gold medals in various athletic competitions, placing the school in the 8th place for top gold medals received. This accomplishment is even more remarkable given that in the top ten, NTHU was the only school without a physical education department. Although NTHU brought home the same number of medals as last year's competition, this year NTHU replaced a previous medal with a gold. This year's big winner was the men's swimming team, being awarded with five gold medals.......<<More>>

Two Tsing Hua presidents exchange agreement Agreement Signed to Formalize and Expand Cooperative and Exchange Projects Between Tsing Hua, Hsinchu and Tsing Hua, Beijing
It is a well-known fact that NTHU and Tsing Hua Beijing is two sister institutions developed from the same root. Relationship between these two sisters have been expanding and intensifying since the 1990's. During the early stage, most of the cooperative projects were initiated by departments or institutes from either side and set up with their respective counterparts. Since 2001, a regular student-exchange project was instituted allowing both universities to send ten students to their sister institute to participate in the research laboratories of the hosting universities. Starting in the first semester of 2006, both sides have been sending twenty exchange students to their counter parts each year and these exchange students can actually enrolled in regular classes/seminars and pursue their studies in their hosting university for a semester. All of those who took part in such exchange programs enjoyed and cherished their experiences and became enthusiastic promoters for a formal and expanded exchange programs between the two Tsing Huas.......<<More>>
